Kifubon story telling competition unearths young Malaysian talents
Last update: 18/10/2018
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 18 (Bernama) -- What started out as a small-time storytelling competition among primary and lower secondary school students in June this year is now set to become a hit as 28 students are expected to vie for the Champion Storyteller title on Oct 27 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
Students from more than 160 schools had participated in the 2018 Storytelling Competition organised by Navagon Digital Sdn Bhd in partnership with Kifubon Malaysia to promote its books and the culture of reading books with valuable lessons.
“We started small and with the hope that students will take up the challenge, but what we did not expect was the very encouraging response with a good number of students participating and excelling in their story-telling ability,” said Vijaya Kunaseharan, business development manager with Navagon, and also the project manager of Kifubon Malaysia.
Navagon, a distributor of educational aid and the Malaysian representative of Kifubon International, was inspired by the Kifubon concept in coming up with the competition, said Vijaya in a press statement issued here today.
Kifubon in Japanese means to share and this act of sharing or distributing books that provide valuable lessons started 10 years ago in Japan, she said.
“A total of 500 students from 160 schools in Selangor, the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Perak and Johor participated in the competition, with both teachers and parents encouraging them all the way,” she said.
Apart from encouraging the students to tell the stories on stage with confidence and enjoying it, the competition also unearthed an amazing number of talented young storytellers.
Many of these youngsters were not only able to retell the stories in the book ‘Splitting The Arrow – The Business of Life’ authored by world-renowned Global Peace Ambassador Prem Rawat, in their own words, but they were able to explain the valuable lessons of the short stories.
In ‘Splitting the Arrow’, Prem Rawat presents a selection of stories drawn from his talks and travels around the world. These stories transcend different cultures and address the business of life: what success and prosperity really mean.
For the Grand Finals, to be held on Oct 27 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, a total of 28 students aged from seven to 14 will be competing for the Championship Trophy under four different categories.
The winners of the competition will also get to meet Prem Rawat, the author himself, later that day at the same venue where he is scheduled to present a talk entitled ‘Peace is Possible - Find Your Inner Strength’. Details on the ‘Peace is Possible’ event can be found at www.wopg.org/events.

Flip the Coin
If you have only experienced your ugliness, then you haven’t flipped the coin.
9/14/2018 12:00:00 PM
Many opposites are never far from each other. Darkness and light, sadness and joy, fear and hope; they are like two sides of the same coin. An excerpt from Prem speaking in Cape Town, South Africa (“Unlocking Hope”)
MC: [Graeme Richards]
"How can you love yourself when you’ve started to believe that you’re ugly and a failure?"
Prem Rawat:
Well, fortunately it is not a fact; it’s only your belief. Beliefs can change.
Belief is like this—and I used to give this analogy. If I’m sitting with somebody, I can say, “Make believe there is a cow here. No harm done; just make believe there’s a cow here—and this cow gives a lot of milk. Just believe that, okay?”
No harm, right? [MC: Right.] But if I’m having tea, real tea, and I want some milk, rest assured this make-believe cow cannot give to my real tea. Now if I’m having make-believe tea, this make-believe cow can give a little bit of its milk for my make-believe tea. But if I’m having real tea, it doesn’t work.
There is another phase after “believing,” and that phase is called “knowing.” It’s living in reality, not just—because a lot of people say to me, when I talk about what I talk about, “Oh, come on; be real.” And the thing is, with all their fear, they’re actually the ones living in fiction. They’re the ones who are living in fiction.
You can believe anything you want, but what is the reality? What is the reality? The reality is that darkness is never far from light.
Last time you flipped on a switch and turned on a light in a dark room, how long did it take for that darkness to disappear? You turned on the light bulb, and it’s just like, djjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjj, like, you know, a drain? Or like a toilet flushing, tschhhhhhhhh? No! Voom? Boomf.
Darkness is never far away from light; light is never far away from darkness. Joy is never far away from sadness, and sadness is never far away from joy. They ride together.
When you go into a bathroom and you lock the door for privacy, do you think it’s private? No, your anger, your fear, your doubt have come with you. Even though you book only one seat for yourself on a bus or an airplane, your anger, your fear, your doubt, they’re always there. Always, always!
But, so is kindness, so is understanding, so is gratitude. These things are also there, because they are the other side of the coin.
And you need to know this—that if you have only experienced your ugliness, then you haven’t flipped the coin. You need to flip the coin. Because the other side of that coin is incredible beauty.
And what is the beauty? What is the beauty? Somebody who is symmetrically shaped? A movie star? What is the beauty? Because, you know the reality of it is, how many movie stars that are drop-dead gorgeous, spend hours sometimes looking at themselves in the mirror, going, “Oh my God. Am I? Am I?”
You are the beholder. If you feel in you—and see, I keep going back to this, and this is a great question, because this gives me more ammunition for my book—that’s why you need to know yourself!
Socrates said, “Know thyself.” You need to know yourself. Why do you need to know yourself? Because that is when you will be able to experience the true beauty that you are. That’s why you need to know yourself.
There’s a billion reasons, I think, 7.5 billion reasons on the face of this earth of why you should know yourself. Because if each one did, I think we would have a very different situation in this world; if the beauty that you conceive in your mind is beauty, that is different than you truly are.
See with the eyes. See the wonderment. The children—and, gorgeous! They look at something incredible, and they’re in awe! In awe!
And of course, the stupid parent going, “That’s the moon.” They could care less. They fell in love with the moon before the stupid dad said—or stupid mom said—“That’s the moon.” They saw the moon that doesn’t have a name, and they loved it. That’s beauty—and you have that beauty.
Whatever other people tell you, you are worse than them, because you constantly sit there and tell yourself, “I’m not beautiful; I’m not beautiful; I’m not....”
This beauty will be gone one day. The same thing that people come and kiss, they will be like, “Huh-huh, no way.”
So, it’s not here—this is not the “beauty” part. The beauty part is here, in your heart, in yourself.

WHY THIS INTERNATIONAL PEACE GURU CHOOSES IPSWICH
There’s a fair chance you’ve never heard his name but this is a man who draws bigger audiences around the globe that any rock star you’ve seen in concert.
And for a few weeks every year, Prem Rawat calls Ipswich home. He has done so for almost 20 years.
Mr Rawat travels the world sharing a “Peace is possible” message and offering a Peace Education Program that is run in prisons here in Queensland, South Africa, South America and the USA.
From Monday, 10 September, more than 3,500 invited participants from 60 countries will attend Mr Rawat’s annual peace event at Ivory’s Rock Conventions and Events at Peak Crossing.
His talks over the five-day event will be translated into 15 languages and relayed via headsets to the audience. A huge team of volunteers is involved to deal with the logistics behind such an event.
Many participants stay on site while others will have had their accommodation booked in Ipswich for a year, since the last event.
So who is Prem Rawat, this global peace ambassador, who is not aligned to any religion and travels to share a practical message about peace beginning with the individual?
He was born in northern India, is based in the US, and has been travelling and talking for 50 years.
As a pilot himself he has also clocked up 14,000 flying hours. In November last year he spoke to an audiences of 400,000 in Buxar, India – the audience stretched back half a kilometre from the stage and delay towers and screens were installed halfway back to relay his words to those who could not hear and see him.
A Google search will tell you he is an Indian American also known as Maharaji and that his peace education is based on helping individuals discover inner strength, choice, appreciation and hope.
They are tools that have proven particularly successful in reducing the rates of return prisoners in places like LA’s Twin Towers prison with 18,000 inmates – the largest prison in America – and also here in Queensland at the Wolston Correctional Centre.
He said some inmates had told him they probably would not have ended up in prison in the first place had they had access earlier in their lives to the skills learned in the program.
Mr Rawat says he looks forward to his time in Australia every year.
“I find Australians’ attitude easy going … and that to me, it enamours you towards peace. You are not looking at a hectic lifestyle – in many ways, the geography of the country won’t allow it to happen, the cities are so far apart,” he said.
“You look at Los Angeles , and from Santa Barbara to San Diego its almost become one thing and if it keeps expanding it’ll just swallow up so many cities and everywhere you go there’ll be traffic jams and so on and so forth.
“So it’s a beautiful place and, at least for me, every time I come to Australia, it’s a sense of relief.”
He said the nature at Ivory’s Rock was one of the drawcards for visitors to the peace event.
“There are so many people coming from around the world and just to see a wallaby they stop cold and say ‘wow, look at that!’,” he said.
“When all of these people come here from all around the world it’s really a vacation for them and not only are they going to be able to take in the nature for the five or six days that they are here but also learn something about appreciation, appreciating their life, appreciating what they have because this world doesn’t allow us to do that – there is not time to slow down and say ‘a little time for me please’.
“That’s what’s been happening here for the last 20 years.”
The vast Ivory’s Rock venue, which includes a large amphitheatres and accommodation in a natural setting, is hired for a variety of events throughout the year including a Spartan race and Earth Frequency Festival.

‘Peace Is Possible’ mural by Ben Eine
During the weekend of May 26-27, inspired by Prem Rawat’s work and message, influential graffiti, and mural artist Ben Eine painted Prem’s phrase ‘Peace Is Possible’ along Ebor Street on the side of Shoreditch House in East London, UK.
Ben Eine is a graffiti vandal turned typographic artist, and he has worked closely with another globally well-known street artist Banksy. PM David Cameron gifted one of Eine’s paintings to President Barack Obama in 2010. As his art is in huge demand globally, he is constantly commissioned internationally to carry out his unique artwork. After finishing the ‘Peace Is Possible’ mural, he traveled for commissions to Russia, Canada, Italy, and Japan. His colorful letters and powerful statements have already appeared on shutters and walls in the United States, Colombia, the UK, France, and Sweden.
Ebor Street is a well-known site for street art and especially Eine’s typography. This made it a great visiting place for tourists and locals during two exceptionally sunny days in London when people from all walks of life came by to see the artist at his work. Many got their picture taken in front of the ‘Peace Wall’ while even more posted, tweeted, and shared the event in social media.
The ‘Peace Is Possible’ mural presents an important and hopeful statement at a time when London and other cities across the UK are experiencing a rise in youth violence.

COURRIER JAPAN INTERVIEW DECEMBER 2015 ISSUE ‘UNDERSTANDING THE POWER OF CHOICE CAN ALLOW YOU TO TRANSFORM.’ Prem Rawat’s new book ‘Splitting the Arrow’
EXCERPTS FROM THE INTERVIEW
==========================
HOW CAN WE GET IN TOUCH WITH THAT INNATE NEED TO BE FULFILLED?
You need to understand the power of choice. When you wake up in the morning, think about how you can make today a little more beautiful. Don’t just think about all the things you have to get done and how difficult that day is going to be. Even if it looks similar to the other days, it’s not. You can choose to spend that day in peace with yourself.
When you see someone who has mastered something, it’s because they have practised it, day after day. In the same way if you practise feeling irritable every day at work, you’ll become a master at it. But, if you practise understanding and kindness to those around you, you’ll become good at that. You cannot change people who you don’t get on with, but you can learn to distance yourself from the negative emotions they evoke in you. You can change how you respond to others.
IS IT EASY TO GET TO KNOW THE SELF?
Yes, it’s very simple.
When you don’t know the self, it brings a discomfort. If you want to blame that discomfort on other things, you can. You can say, ‘He said something nasty to me.’ In the end the solutions won’t be found outside of you. Acknowledge that you want to feel good in your life and begin to take action, so that it can become a reality for you.
